This cool old church was once a Lutheran church, as far as I could figure out, but I was not able come up with its original name.
It’s typical of early Twentieth Century Gothic Revival–showing more influence of the English Gothic, as opposed to the French or German influence in the Nineteenth.
But what I really enjoyed about this church is how well they matched the brick color of the Modernist addition, presumably for Sunday School classrooms or a small parochial school. If you know the original name of this church, please let me know!

This was Markus (i.e. St. Mark’s) Evangelical Lutheran. It was a daughter congregation of nearby Bethlehem Lutheran.
Thank you, Andrew! I believe there is another St. Mark’s congregation, as well, in the Central Corridor? http://stmarkselca.com/about-us/history
Chris, I was baptized at Marcus Lutheran Church in 1947. My father was born next door at 4028 N. 22nd. His family (Vogt) lived there from circa 1900 until the early 50s. It’s a lovely old building, isn’t it?
Thanks for sharing! I love these personal stories.
Hello Mary . I went to Marcus church and school. I am wondering if you have any pictures of the Alter at all. We never took any pictures and I really wish to see that BEAUTIFUL church inside again. Thank you in advance. Carla songer ( roderick )
Sorry, Carla. I don’t have any pictures of the church or of my grandparents’ home next door to it. Wish I did.
Markus Lutheran Church was formed in 1904 and the property at 22nd and Angelica was purchased in 1905. My great -great grandfather was one of the organizers.
Karen , I went to church and school at Markus . I was wondering if you had any pictures of the church inside ? I was young in 3rd grade . I remember how Beautiful it was! The 2 lamb’s in the front always amazed me. Thank you for your time! Carla ( Roderick) songer.
Sorry I do not. I was there once as a child for a great uncle’s funeral. My grandfathers family all went there.
Thank you very much.
Karen, are you related to Bill and Helen Rodefeld? They were dear friends of my parents.
Yes! He was my great uncle and I attended his funeral there in the 70’s. They were very nice.
Who were your parents?
Oh my gosh! My dad was Herbert O Vogt. He lived in the house next door to Marcus. He knew Helen and Bill forever. We used to visit their house (with Grossie (Helen’s mom) in her hospital bed right between the living and dining room. I was at both their funerals. Also, they had a nephew who was born on the same day I was 11/5/1946. I think he was named Bill or Billy.
Carla- I searched further in my mom ‘s geneology research and did find a xeroxed copy of the altar area of Markus that was in an anniversary book. I cannot attach it here but if you want it send me an email at kurtz83@gmail.com and I will send it to you.
Wow! That’s interesting. Bill must have been a nephew of Helen as there is no nephew in the Rodefeld family by that name. I did not know they had taken care of her mother.
I wonder what house you visited, probably in the city? We used to go to their home in the late 60’s for Christmas Brunch. It was on Highmont and West Florissant Rd. I traveled past there to go to work for 10 years in my late career and always thought of them.
We visited them at the old house in the city and then at their new house. One lovely memory: I remember Helen telling me how they held hands during their prayers every single night. They came to my high school graduation party in ’64. Long time ago. I called them Auntie Helen and Uncle Bill.
I just checked some old records. Helen’s maiden name was
Meierhoefer. Their old house was on N. 9th St.
