St. Louis Place has whole streets that once had houses owned by Paul McKee, and one by one, I documented how they were destroyed by brick thieves back in 2008

St. Louis Avenue now is seeing real estate speculation due to the new NGA, which was part of the Northside TIF. In one of the more bizarre and shady real estate transactions in St. Louis history, McKee sold back land he had received from the city, making a tidy profit. Must be nice.

When was the last time you heard someone say, “And then the real estate speculators came in and saved the neighborhood”?

My dad and I were driving through that area about 20 years ago. We went down a few streets on our way to pick my mom up from work. As we rode, we passed so many struggling homes, and my dad said “You can’t tell me that wasn’t a mansion once.”
Those homes are massive, stunning, and often irreplaceable. What a tragedy that this was allowed to happen.
