Vermont Avenue Between Primm and Schirmer Streets, Carondelet

Please join me on July 24 at 6:30 at the Central Library in downtown St. Louis for a lecture about my new book. Please register here.

In my continuing series of looking at the state streets in Carondelet, I headed up Vermont Avenue from its southern terminus with Ivory and Primm streets all the way up to basically where it ends at Interstate 55.

And as can be expected, down south in the first segment up to Schirmer Street, the history of Carondelet as a separate town and its advanced age shows in the housing stock.

Note the small, narrow vernacular house above, as well as the other wood frame houses that predominate the area.

While there are many wood frame Greek Revival houses, brick begins to creep in after the Civil War.

These two little guys below are extremely old, and could easily be from before the Civil War.
