Viaducts, Trestles and Bridges, Chouteau’s Landing

Wandering around the vacant lot where the former Powell Square Building was located before it was demolished in Chouteau’s Landing, I was struck at just how much infrastructure there is clogging this part of the city.

Perhaps it is a necessary evil, needed to move commerce and industry around the center of the city for what is remaining.

You can get a great view of the ramps to the Poplar Street Bridge from here, too!

In fact, there are no barriers from the ground onto the traffic lanes of the interstate right here. I don’t know how safe that is.

The pillars on the opposite side of Poplar (East St. Louis near 8th St.) remind me of the modern, industrial equivalent of the pillars in Karnak Temple in Egypt.

Some simple aspects of structural engineering haven’t changed!
