West Barrett Tunnel, Revisited

I originally looked at the eastern entrance of the West Barrett Tunnel back in December of 2013. I felt it was time to do some more investigation and find the western entrance. Supposedly this tunnel and its eastern mate are the oldest train tunnels west of the Mississippi River.

As I wrote back in 2013, the two tunnels were excavated back in 1853 for the Pacific Railroad. The western entrance looms through the undergrowth.

Looking through the fence, you can see the railcar that is parked in the eastern entrance of the western tunnel.

Cut into the solid limestone bedrock, the tunnel had to be buttressed with cut stone and concrete over the years before it was abandoned for the cut to the south.

The tunnel was longer but due to collapse it is shorter today.

It is quite the sight to behold, left behind in isolation.
