It’s long been accepted that Adler and Sullivan’s original design of the round windows on the second floor with bearcat terracotta sculptures and a Damascus arch entryway (seen here) for the 1892 Union Trust Building were removed at some point in the early Twentieth Century. However, we now know it was incorrect to believe that the current square windows were installed after the removal of the round windows. Looking at this photograph of the adjacent Chemical Building we can now spot an intermediate stage where bay windows existed for some period of time, which are clearly visible in the detail below. This changes our understanding of the evolution of the facade of the Union Trust since its construction to its modern renovation.
