Long-suffering St. Mary’s Infirmary, is finally being put out of its misery.
One half of the building, up to the central hallway, has been demolished.
I’m sad, but realistically, it was in danger of collapse, and the city officials I know who made the decision couldn’t put off the emergency demolition any longer.
Damaged by numerous fires, as the above pictures attests, it was located in the middle of the AmerenUE campus (itself a problematic entity, creating a huge, wasteful dead zone south of downtown), and really stood no long term chance of renovation.
I always knew this would be the likely fate of this building, but I am still sad to see it go. I always liked seeing it from highway 40.
Agreed.
