A Waste of Money and Space

Update: I revisited the abandoned apartment complex in early 2019 and again in December of 2022.

Up along I-70 in the Hyde Park neighborhood, in a place that no one in their right mind would want to live, sit these abandoned, trashed and rotting public housing buildings. The streets are all blocked off around here, making the area, despite facing an interstate, incredibly isolated and forlorn. They are only a fraction of the age of the neighboring buildings, but they are already going to be demolished.

This is what used to be here, along 11th Street: most likely a group of stately homes, now long gone.

I hate that series of buildings a little more every time I see them. Aside from those buildings being incredibly out of place, everything about that situation (land use, building architecture, targeted demographic, infrastructure, etc.) screams “we don’t really know what we’re doing, but if we build something that looks suburban surely we can’t lose”.
