After the Tornado: Academy Neighborhood

When I crossed Union Boulevard to look at the Academy neighborhood, which was struck with the full force of the tornado, things got deeply depressing. The neighborhood is bounded by Union on the west, Delmar on the south, MLK on the north and Kingshighway on the east. First of all, I had to detour because I gigantic tree was blocking my path.

First up was this pile of rubble, which is a deeply sad loss for many, as it was just stabilized by the City due to its high merit. I looked at it back in April of 2013 and November of 2020 and now it is obliterated.

This neighborhood was beginning to see real investment, and I predicted that in thirty years it would have really shown at turnaround since it was already stable. Now it has been totally trashed, with so much destruction.

It looks like one of those houses bought by the creepy rehabbers from Fort Knox who paint their houses black was not spared, below.

I remarked that the path of the tornado seemed to be charted by a sentient mind that chose it for the purposes of going through the best preserved neighborhoods of the North Side to cause the maximum amount of damage.

But there is hope because many building did survive with minor damage.

But still, many will have to be demolished. Trees have been lost in huge numbers.

And the Wayman church on Kingshighway, which I looked at back in November of 2020, suffered extensive damage throughout.

It is sad as we were just starting to see some significant investment. BUT we will turn it around and get back on track. It is a wonderful neighborhood and I love living here.
