Arco Avenue, The Grove

I love the one story brick bungalows of St. Louis; they’re modest, but they have all the detailing that their two story brothers have. I like to think that each house was just as important as the next, and builders and masons never skimped on the craftsmanship and detail for even the smallest houses. Arco Avenue in the Grove has some of the best of the one story house genre in St. Louis. I honestly think the proportions of one story houses in St. Louis are more beautiful than their taller neighbors.

The one below seems to have grown a second floor at some point!

Intrigued by the Gothic pointed arches thrown in on this building, and on another building below.

Then there’s this masterpiece of Italian Renaissance architecture thrown in for good measure on this apartment building–or are they row houses?

That apartment building/rowhouses you included is one of my favorite buildings in the city. I wish it wasn’t so hard to photograph!

Agree. The brickwork, the play of arches and circles, the recessed bays… striking.

They are row houses! Individually owned. I live in the 4400 block of Arco. Trying to find out what style my house is. It’s a brick 3-story with an arched doorway and windows. There are columns built into the brick around the doorway. My roof is not flat and we have a gabled dormer. Built in the mid 1890s. The best description I can find is “townhouse” but I know there is more than that! Would appreciate your thoughts.

It appears my house may be of the “Rundbogenstil” style, which I believe is part of the Romanesque Revival, but I could be mistaken.
