Back in February of 2021, I had alerted readers to the abandonment of the Bissell Mansion, and already back then it was starting to look unkempt.
Based off a reader tip, I went back and took another look, and things were getting much more out of control. The building looks reasonably secure, but I must remind readers that this is one of the most historic buildings in St. Louis. City Landmark #20, it was built in 1831 and I’ve heard claims that it is the oldest brick structure left in the city, provided it doesn’t go up in flames in a suspicious fire.
For those readers out there that once (or maybe currently) worked in fast food, remember that nasty smell of grease mixed with dish detergent? Well, that’s what it smells like when you walk around the perimeter of the house. Not good.

Yeah, they’ve dropped the price around $40,000 from when they first listed it.
Is the neighborhood area terrible? Is crime rate up there? Could be why no buyers
It’s not an economically viable location, really. It would best be in the hands of a loving owner who would make it their personal residence.

It has new owners who are planning on renovating and reopening the restaurant!
It will be gone soon…first the scrappers,then the folks who will catch it on fire.
I’ve been told the scrappers have already hit the house pretty badly.
Neighbors told me the central air system was stolen and the kitchen is pretty much non-existent in terms of appliances. Apparently the last owners just walked away and left it to decay. It’s very sad…
