DeSoto Avenue used to be completely hidden from the rest of the world by the thick underbrush the blanketed the hill north of East Prairie Avenue. It has now been cleared, and the feeling is one of exposed openness.
This street has a weird feeling now, one that I suspect the residents are still getting used to.
But then there’s this really beautiful house, sitting by itself in all of its splendor.
The four-family apartment buildings below, which I photographed back in February of 2012 (third photo) were not demolished because they are still privately owned. They are now out in the open, and will probably just eventually collapse, ignored by their slumlord owners.
Please join me tomorrow, March 20, 2019 at 10:30 AM in the Lee Auditorium at the Missouri History Museum as part of Johnny Rabbit’s Untold Stories and Secrets of St. Louis, where I will be speaking about some of my favorite “hidden houses” and Dr. Adam Hammer.
