Crumby Run-Down Malls of St. Louis #5: Northwest Plaza “Reborn”

Did you ever have a friend who went through a rough patch, and then when they finally moved past that hardship, they just never were the same anymore?

That’s sort of what I feel like when I look at Northwest Plaza. I covered its partial demolition several years ago.

I thought that the original outdoor mall was quite beautiful, but then enclosure came, and then it was dead one day. I am retroactively declaring Northwest Plaza “Crumby Run-Down Malls of St. Louis #5.” We’ll see how its rebirth goes.

Anyone have any photos of the mall before enclosure?

I wish I did! They’re out there somewhere, but I haven’t found anyone who has them. Much of the second half of the Twentieth Century photographic documentation is not in archives yet.

It’s such a beautiful street! Sorry I missed your house.
