East Barrett Tunnel

Julius Hutawa, Atlas of the county of St. Louis, Missouri 1862 [Page 8] [Township 44, Range 5 East of the 5th prime meridian], 1862. Missouri History Museum, Lib204-00009. The East Barrett Tunnel is circled in red.

Moving past Barrett Station, further on down the tracks is the East Barrett Tunnel. The western entrance to the tunnel has been covered up, most likely by the northern approach to the Barrett Station Road bridge over the train tracks.

The eastern tunnel is much larger and longer than the western tunnel.

Due to the proximity to a nearby subdivision, it looks like teenagers have partied in the entrance to the tunnel over the years.

There is soot from countless trains passing through the tunnel over the years.

Like the other tunnel, this one was once longer but due to the collapse of the bedrock above, it is several dozen feet shorter today.

Despite the western entrance being sealed, you can walk back into the tunnel quite a long way.

There is pitch darkness off in the distance.

Super cool! Never knew about these, or don’t recall if I was told about these as a kid. I’m might have been as my mom and dad loved St. Louis history, and mom in particular was a fan of the transportation museum. She took her Cub Scouts there as I recall, or perhaps it was dad taking the Boy Scouts!

This is not on the property of the Museum of Transport!

I operate the Trolley at the Transportation Museum and speak of the tunnel a lot. I have never been inside the tunnel, and this gives me a different perspective to talk about. Thank you so much for the pictures. I wish we had these pictures on hard copy to share with our passengers who also are curious about the inside of the tunnel.

Ah ha! You found it! Dude nice, found this one 2 years ago researching old maps in the area too. Got some great GoPro footage of it. Never posted because I was making a whole documentary about the construction of it as well as in the process of checking out that crack in the ceiling.

I bet we could maybe make this a COOL bike path dude!I’m telling you this is one of my favorite secrets of the area and I think we should keep it that way 😉
