Former Normandy Hospital South

It’s hard to keep track of all of the names of the hospital at the intersection of Dougherty Ferry and Des Peres roads, but it was born in 1974 as Normandy Hospital South. Nearby Interstate 270 was actually still known as 244 at the time, and the interchange was only half complete, with nearby Big Bend Road, still only a half interchange, functioning in tandem with Dougherty Ferry.

The hospital cost $10,000,000 to build and consisted of three projecting wings, all set at slightly different angles to create a fan. It also seems that Normandy Hospital was an osteopathic facility.

My visit was precipitated by the announcement that the final owner, St. Luke’s had announced the closure of the facility. I went inside and found a small chapel. I suspect that the property is worth a lot of money for residential development, and may be demolished in the near future.
