From the Vault: Union Station, Gary

Update: Announced in August of 2023, the station will undergo an $8 million dollar renovation, which I covered in this post from September of 2023.

The impressive Beaux-Arts edifice of Gary Union Station opened in 1910, only four years after the founding of the town it served.

Abandoned since the 1970s, I find a certain irony in the government allowing the building to fall into abandonment and disuse considering there is actually still commuter rail service to downtown Chicago from Gary.

There is an effort by local urban explorers to fix up the building and open it to the public. I am not sure how well it is doing.

Built with a strong steel support structure, it certainly can be renovated if there is the will. We will wait and see what happens.
