Hyde Park in the Morning Light #36, The Back Side

Much of the activity of a household would take place on the back side of the house, and in fact, many upstairs apartments were only reached via an outdoor staircase reached through a “mouse hole” in the front facade.

Likewise, as can be seen below, house were often built on the backyards of houses on the main street, such as can be seen below. There is a prominent mouse hole in the middle of the bulding.
