I wish I could have seen this area before interstates came crashing through; I-44 was built less than a decade before I was born, but the damage was already done.
Volunteer trees have been cleared from the chain link fence, but after they’d already grown into the fence.
No one was in sight when we crossed over this pedestrian bridge.
Living in Glendale at the time with my family (and being around 5-7 yrs), I have a vague recollection of the gigantic dirt trench which would eventually become I44. The Interstates should have been routed into a ring road such as I270, and then carried the remaining traffic on improved arterials, instead of smashing through residential neighborhoods like a bull in a china shop.
STL County seems not to have learned any lessons from the destruction of that era.
