Knapp, North Nineteenth, Helen and Benton Streets, St. Louis Place

I was wandering around St. Louis Place when I caught these survivors on one block stretches in between Mullanphy/Howard streets and Madison Avenue. The two buildings above and below are on Knapp Street.

Below are the two survivors left on North Nineteenth.

Helene Street has much more left, including a bunch of wonderful Second Empire houses, as can be seen below.

Perhaps what the lesson of these houses are is that if there had been intervention early enough, these houses’ long lost neighbors could have been saved, and these neighborhoods could have been just as dense as any other area on the South Side.

I also wandered up to Benton Street, where the two houses are left.

i hope those who own the house in the first photo can get some pointing and relaying done before the whole cornice section tumbles down.
