Lemp Avenue Between Lynch and Pestalozzi Streets, Benton Park

Lemp Avenue continues on far north of the original subdivision that Adam Lemp laid out by his cave down by Cherokee Street. In fact, at one point the northern part of what is now Lemp Avenue was called Buena Vista Avenue, probably named after the battle from the Mexican American War. As part of the standardization of street names, the latter lost out to the more famous appellation.

This is one street in Benton Park where there is still a fair amount of rehabbing going on, and a lot of interesting and very old housing stock. It also “doglegs” around what was once an old Civil War fort, unimaginably named Fort No. 3.
