Macy’s Closing at Chesterfield Mall

Back in May of 2020, I had predicted the shuttered Macy’s at Chesterfield Mall would never reopen after it closed at the beginning of the pandemic. It did in fact reopen, but now it is closing again, and reopening in a smaller version in the Chesterfield Valley. I would imagine that the remaining portion of the interior of the mall will close now, soon.

As so often happens, the taggers have moved in to the disused space; above, someone named “Spencer” has left his mark.

It’s a little surreal, but where there was once a giant carpeted lounge until the late 1990s pickelball courts now reign.

This will all be demolished (don’t worry, I’ll photograph it), and replaced with a town center (or centre), and will probably be quite successful. I tried to get a comment from the plants, but they were silent on the issue.

lol indeed! The last time I strolled by an active Spencer’s in a mall, I did a double-take myself. How modern of them to redo the brand name in that way, especially since they apparently date to 1947.

About 50 years ago, a friend and I wondered what these shopping emporiums would look like in the future and the consensus was they would end up scary and abandoned. The march of waste and predatory Capitalism moves on.
