More of New Harmony, Indiana

We saw some other interesting buildings in New Harmony, including the Working Man’s Institute, founded by William Maclure in 1838. The current building is from 1894 and is still open to the public.

Besides serving as a library, it also contains a museum of artifacts from the earliest period of New Harmony, as well as a very nice collection of oil painting copies of famous European Renaissance and Early Modern masterworks. It’s very cool.

The Murphy Auditorium, which is self-explanatory, was built next door in the early Twentieth Century.

The downtown has a nice collection of Italianate storefronts preserved and occupied by many different businesses.

Below is the Masons’ Lodge.

The Opera House went through all sorts of iterations, including a parking garage for servicemen’s automobiles when they served overseas.
