North Up Blair Avenue, North of Penrose Street, Hyde Park, March 2024

Heading north from Penrose Street and continuing our tour in Hyde Park, we see that Ferry Street is blocked off again, no doubt due to another problem with the sewer underneath in what was originally a deep chasm in the natural topography of the earth before the neighborhood’s development.

We detour to the east down Farragut Street.

We looked at this block back in June of 2022.

We go further up Randall Place and then turn left onto Bissell Street to get back onto Blair Avenue at the Red Water Tower.

There are all sorts of interesting houses up at the top of the hill.

Even some wood frame ones are still surviving.

But for the most part there are homes for the much wealthier.

The Jewish Orthodox Old Home is doing badly, and there are signs that its end may be coming soon.

Permits have been pulled for destroying the “taps” which is the lingo for the water line hookup from the water main to customers under the street.

Also, as is plainly obvious from these photos, a demolition permit has been pulled for an amount of money that seems to only include the old building on the south side of the complex that was already collapsing. The central wing and northern wings seem to be spared demolition.

At this point, we reach East Grand Boulevard and leave Hyde Park.
