North Up Blair Avenue, Old North, May 2026, Part Two

We continue north up Blair Avenue today, starting at the intersection of North Market Street and seeing the first Second Empire buildings.

Vacant lots are interspersed with occupied and rehabbed houses.

I’ve always liked the house below, with Italianate stylings.

We now make it to Warren Street, where there are commercial buildings.

More vacant lots.

I’ve always liked these two buildings, which have been vacant as long as I remember.

One is Second Empire and the other is Greek Revival or Federal in style. I don’t know if there are any plans for the two houses.

Blair Avenue in St. Louis is named after the prominent Blair family of Missouri. It honors Francis Preston Blair Jr. (1821–1875), a significant figure in St. Louis history. He was a lawyer, politician, and Union General during the Civil War who later became a U.S. Senator and Representative from Missouri. The family was deeply involved in the city’s real estate and political development, making the naming of the avenue a fitting tribute to their influence.
I went to elementary shool with Tripp Blair and remember his sister for her dislike of boys at that time.

The curious set of structures (House?) at Warren is a fascinating and complex one. The wing to the left is a large room connected to the other two story corner by a two story wing . The entire complex was a long serving doctor’s office . A civic preservationist kept it standing at great expense and effort and has now sold it ro restoration – minded owners . It once had a tree in the center of the U , which made it look more engaging .

The house at Blair and Warren is from the 1860s and yes, has likely been muddled and added to a whole lot in its life. it was stabilized heavily circa 2003(!) and has been still sitting empty. I thought I saw (can’t find it anymore) that SLDC had an RFP for this property (probably owned by LRA). Great to hear it has owners who want to fix it up, but if possible I would like to know if that has a chance in hell of happening
