It’s had a lot of names over the years, and is now apartments, but the Smith Academy began as a trade school. It later was part of the public schools and had an affiliation with Washington University. It was rehabbed by the Roberts Brothers. Mauran, Russell and Garden also designed this building, opening in 1905.
After the original Christian Brothers College (also GS and HS) on (then Easton, now MLK Blvd.) and N. Kingshighway burned in October of 1916, WashU allowed the school to finish out its academic year in the Smith Academy building.
CBC’s next building, at 6501 Clayton Road did not rise until 1922, when the school resumed, although then dedicated to HS only.
The site of the burned building has been Sherman Park since the city bought it from the Order after the fire.
