Update: This church collapsed into a giant pile of rubble on June 25, 2021, leaving only the tower and Sunday School wing standing. I’m glad I photographed it when I had the chance. I was shocked to hear reports of its collapse; it did not look that structurally unstable, but the heavy rains and high…
Former Kingshighway Presbyterian Church
Update: Damaged in the tornado that hit the city on May 16, 2025. How I missed the majestic former Kingshighway Presbyterian Church in the past is beyond me (maybe I was keeping my eyes on the road in what is a particularly wild stretch of that major artery), but I finally got a chance to…
Former St. Mark’s Roman Catholic Church, Revisited
Update: I revisited the church and school in May of 2022. I went by the old St. Mark’s Roman Catholic Church on Page Boulevard at Academy Avenue. It looks much like it did the last time I visited, but I think more of the window tracery (the wood framing) in the tower is missing. The…
Former Bethany Evangelisch Lutheran Church, Revisited
Constructed in 1928 as the Bethany Evangelisch Lutheran Church, this building is now occupied by the Tabernacle of Life Church. It is a great example of English Gothic Revival architecture. It was absolutely glowing in the early morning light the Saturday I photographed it. See this section of Natural Bridge Avenue here. I visited the…
Bissell Water Tower, October 2020
I stopped by the Bissell Water Tower after looking at the Grand Water Tower. It’s on tap for rehabilitation next, according to people I’ve spoken with.
Grand Water Tower, Repainted
I went by and photography the Grand Water Tower (yes, I know it’s technically a standpipe) and checked out the new paint job. It looks great. Compare it to my photograph of the capital in particular from March of 2019 to see the difference.
St. Louis Avenue West of North Florissant Avenue
I’ve sporadically photographed the block just to the west of North Florissant Avenue, and mainly the buildings on the south side of the street. They’ve all been destroyed on the south side: first the Winkelmann Mansion, then a row of houses in a fire. But the north side of the street has some amazing buildings…
Updates on the Inner North Side
Update: The remaining houses on the north side of the street have been demolished. Two buildings on St. Louis Avenue in JeffVanderLou apparently had become something of celebrities due to some graffiti someone had painted on them years ago. I came by while they were in the process of being demolished; the one on the…
Curby Memorial Presbyterian Church, Benton Park West, Fall 2020
Curby Memorial Presbyterian Church has its roots going back in 1873 on South Broadway, and built the current sanctuary in 1898 at a cost of $17,000. It is named after the daughter of a major donor for this building.
German Evangelisch Lutheran Church of Our Redeemer, Benton Park West, Fall 2020
Update: We revisited the church’s interior in February of 2026. I’ve always liked this church, and in fact I know I’ve photographed it before in the past, but now I can’t find that post. In particular, the dramatic double portal in the front facade is what has always drawn me to it. It’s a classic…
