Peabody Elementary School is another institution with a long history in the neighborhood just south of downtown that can be traced back to at least the 1870s if not earlier.

At one point it became known as Clinton-Peabody, and as some readers might remember, it shared the name of the housing projects nearby.

A new school opened up replacing the historic building, seen below, which was designed by George W. Sanger in 1939.

But that school, which is now a charter school, clearly proved to be too small, and a new building was constructed, opening in in 1957 with F. Ray Leimkuehler as the supervising architect.

It looks like many of the schools from the 1950s, with the thin of row windows, but in this case there is glass block above. It is not terribly attractive.

At some point the pilasters, for lack of a better term, have been painted blue and yellow.
