Penrose in the Snow #7, The Past and Future of Retail

Corner stores rarely exist in St. Louis anymore, as larger chains have taken over. If you own a car, it’s no big deal to go to your favorite store. If you’re on foot, it’s a different story. That being said, I don’t resent places such as Family Dollar; at least they are willing to invest in the North Side. Many stores can’t make it work financially.

Ahh, gone are the days of small, family owned corner markets, or as my grandparents would say, confectionary. They lived on Itaska in south city and right next door was the corner market which was a favorite destination of the grandchildren where the cases of penny candy beckoned us!
