Pestalozzi Street Between Louisiana and Arkansas Avenues

Heading west of Louisiana, we have the International Institute, the former St. Elizabeth’s Convent and High School on the left, or south, and a row of houses on the right, or north.

Beyond a doubt every single one of these houses, with the exception of a couple outliers, were built by the same contractor and developer at the same time.

I always laugh when urbanists criticize tract housing in the suburbs today. First of all Tower Grove East was the suburbs in the 1910s, and they also built tracts housing back then, too!

Now do I think the building materials were perhaps higher quality one hundred years ago? Well obviously, that’s the purpose of this whole website.

And there are certainly craftspeople alive who can still do this work if you seek them out and are willing to pay what they’re worth.
