Renovation of the Old Bavarian Inn

Update: See the progress of construction in the fall of 2022.

There’s some great news at the long dormant and abandoned, and frequently vandalized former Bavarian Inn restaurant at the southeastern corner of Arsenal Street and Minnesota Avenue. The rehabilitation will return a restaurant space and outdoor patio to the old storefront facing Arsenal, and the house facing Minnesota will become a rental property.

A later kitchen addition to the south of the restaurant building has been removed, as well as later brick work that filled in large floor to ceiling windows that faced Arsenal. This intersection has been moribund for decades, and this is the first step of much more development, sources say.

When I saw the fence around the property & the work going on, I wasn’t sure what was happening. Glad to see it being rehabbed and some much needed investment in the area.

Back in the early to mid 90s, when I was in my late 20s, we would occasionally stop at the Bavarian Inn. I remember they had a fireplace in the winter and would keep serving after official closing time if they knew you. That area was pretty rough back then and that’s the main reason we only went occasionally.

My neighbor down the block was shot in a robbery in the 1990s walking back from the Bavarian Inn, which is just four blocks from my house. It was indeed a rough neighborhood back then.

I spent my weekend summer nights as a child in the 80s at “The BI,” watching my dad play drums in the German band. Wonderful to see the space is being renovated. Thank you for the update.
