I’ll have to admit I didn’t think I’d see the day, but the Shanley Building has been rehabilitated and saved from demolition.

A very large residential building has taken up much of the rest of the block, but it has been built around the former orthodontist’s office, originally designed by St. Louis architect Harris Armstrong.

Built in 1935 for Leo M. Shanley, it is given credit (by whom?) for being the first International Modern building in St. Louis.

Perhaps it’s hard to see how forward-thinking this building was at the time considering how commonplace the design elements are today. Even the lamp preserved in the permanent collection of the Saint Louis Art Museum is before its time.

Looks like they still need to fix some rot or something under the gutters below.

When Joe Wick (son of Old Judge Coffee) and I returned to St Louiis in 2011, Joe pointed out this building as where his orthodontist was. I’m glad to see it “made it”.
Thanks, Chris. This is a beautiful post. And I recall us walking past it last year.
I remember that! They were fixing and tuckpointing every single crack in the concrete.
