
Wow, just look at what St. Mary’s Hospital used to look like almost one hundred years ago when they had moved from their Near South Side location. The wing on the left was demolished back in 2010, which seems like a million years ago.

There is a little bit of a wing, perhaps built in the 1940s, which sticks out to the west along Clayton Road. But this is the story of a hospital that has grown “in place,” and it has built up around its historic buildings, demolishing as needed.

The original building was beautiful, but expansion has largely covered it up. Remember when they demolished the convent? It’s a huge parking lot now.

I was born at that hospital way back in 1948 so it must have looked very much the same as in the vintage picture. It’s a jumbled mess now. My mother said that the nuns that were in charge in those days tended to be rather abrupt and down right mean. We survived though and she is still with us at 100 years old!
