I woke up early and caught the sunrise coming up over the fields to the east. The fields are fallow for now, but in a month or two they will be brought back to life.

Clouds Breaking, Family Farm, March 2022, Deer Creek Township
As everyone in St. Louis knows, last week the weather was horrible, and it was elsewhere in the Midwest, but late on Friday the clouds broke and the sun came out, leaving dramatic light and shadow over the prairie at the family farm. As the sun set, pink and purple light shone across the fields…
Christian Science Reading Room
We couldn’t figure out the history of what is now a Christian Science Reading Room, but it is clearly an old house, judging from its Greek Revival style and the soft brick that makes up its walls. Early brick in the St. Louis region was not fired at as high of temperatures as later eras,…
Farmstead, Surrounded by Highways
We spotted this farmhouse, which had received some more decorative millwork but is still essentially a Greek Revival wood frame structure, sitting on a rapidly shrinking plot of land on St. Peters Parkway, just to the north of the Page Avenue Extension. What is interesting is that fair number of outbuildings are still standing. I’m…
Early Morning, Family Farm, Deer Creek Township, Tazewell County, Illinois
When I first woke up the sun was shining, but then the fog materialized an hour after sunrise. As I drove up the road to the north to photograph the longhorns at a neighbor’s farm, the mists suddenly lifted only enough for me to take pictures of my family farm’s barns emerging from the mist….
Dusk, Family Farm, Deer Creek Township, Tazewell County, Illinois
The sun sets early in December but I was still able to get these photos of the family farm. Update: The cattle barn below was destroyed by a tornado in March of 2023.
Montauk, Clermont, Iowa
Back in the fall of 2018, I had discovered the town of Clermont in northeastern Iowa, one of the most special places in America. I realized later I had missed one of the most amazing houses in America, high up on the hill above the town. That house and surrounding estate is Montauk, the home…
Round Barn, Hazleton, Iowa
We visited our family’s farm near Maynard, Iowa in mid July and also traveled through an Amish settlement near Hazleton, in Buchanan County. There is a round barn, but it is on private property, so we could not get very close to photograph it. But the landscape is still beautiful in the mid-summer light.
Hayloft, Horse Barn, July 2021
I climbed up in the hayloft of the horse barn and took some photos. It’s actually much older than the 1901 date that someone painted on the outside. The barn is held together with wooden pegs, not nails, and huge pieces of hardwood.
Family Farm, Deer Creek Township, Tazewell County, Early July 2021, Saturday Morning
The next day early in the morning I headed out into the eastern fields of my family’s farm to see how the soybeans were doing, and looked out to the west down into the valley. While it might not look like it in the photos, it was actually very wet in the area after four…
