The Rest of the Square, Edina, November 2012

The southern wall of the square is one of the longest preserved row of Italianate storefronts I’ve seen in the Midwest. Its existence is a treasure. It’s changed little since 2008. See Edina in 2016.

Edina, Return to the West Side of the Square, November 2012

In a first for this website, I’m actually publishing pictures I’d let sit around for years after I published later photos. But renewed interest in Edina’s stunning west wall of buildings got me to pull these out of storage. It was an early morning in November 2012, and the light was hitting them beautifully. Read…

Truman State University, Revisited

Based off the campus of the University of Virginia, the grounds of Truman State University still look good after all of these years being gone. At one point before a disastrous fire that drained the lake to fight it, this would have been the view to the original building of what was once known as…

Thousand Hills State Park, March 2016

I’ve always been intrigued by the explosion of lakes created by dams in the 1950s and 60s. Created out of valleys to provide “recreation” and a stable water supply, they often are long and snaking affairs. This one is Forest Lake, in Thousand Hills State Park.

Adair County Courthouse, Revisited

The courthouse once had a tower, like most of the courthouses in Northeast Missouri, but it was taken down because of structural issues. The towns up this way are not nearly as wealthy as they used to be, and fixing expensive masonry structures doesn’t happen much anymore. Look at what happened to the Clark County…

Memphis, Scotland County

The county seat of Scotland County, Memphis, sits high on elevated ground looking out over the farmland of northeastern Missouri. It is a pretty town, with a dramatic setting. It has at least one National Register property, Downing House, which began as a Federalist house and then was transformed into an Italianate villa. I like…

Edina, Revisited Late March 2016

Update: I did post those photographs from 2012: The first part, and the second part. I have always been impressed by the architecture of the “double square” in Edina, lined with some of the best ornamentation and form in Missouri. Ironically, I have photographs from 2012 that I may post in the future, but here…

Lancaster, Schuyler County

Lancaster is the small county seat of Schuyler County, due north of Kirksville on US Highway 63. As with many of the small, sparsely populated counties, Schuyler County required the rebuilding of its courthouse, designed by Kenneth von Aachen. Relatively conservative when commissioned in 1958, the Colonial Revival building replaced an older Nineteenth Century structure….

Green City and Greencastle

Green City sits in between Kirskville and Milan, and has some interesting house stock, a small downtown, and several beautiful churches. Green Castle is a smaller town to the east of Green City; it possesses a few streets off of Route 6.
