3600 Block of Blaine Avenue, Part 2

Moving east up the hill towards Grand Boulevard, the beautiful houses continue to spread out before the visitor. These houses are well-maintained, and are in good shape.

3600 Block of Blaine Avenue, Part 1

The blocks northwest of the intersection of Grand and Lafayette are known as the Tiffany neighborhood. It is isolated, quiet–and surprisingly resilient. I could not find an abandoned house anywhere in this area. Here is the western end of the 3600 block of Blaine Avenue.

Young Victims of Violence Memorial

Update: I went by the block where Christopher Harris was murdered in 2018. It has changed dramatically from the time when he died. I remember when the boy mentioned in this inscription was killed. However, the sculpture is supposed to represent “Every Child,” and not a single victim. There are other bronze statues located around…

Saint Louis University Medical School Building

Anyone know much about this building? I cannot seem to find any information on when it was built, and who the architect was. This addition on the upper floors to the north was very well done, and works well with the original structure. The two buildings below are now offices incorporated into the medical complex….

Last Survivors

Update: Now demolished for the new SLU Hospital. These little guys were part of a larger residential neighborhood southwest of the intersection of Grand and Chouteau. All of their neighbors have been torn down, and these two will be soon. Senior citizens interested in attending a two-part lecture June 22 and 29, 2017 from 10:00-12:00…

Future Site of Saint Louis University Hospital, Early June, 2017

I remarked to my companions that I felt like I was in Europe, with its unbroken vistas of fields surrounding Medieval cities. This will be the site of the new SLU Hospital, replacing the old Firmin Desloge building. Yes, it spelled the end for the Pevely Dairy Building. I wasn’t happy it was torn down,…

Firmin Desloge Tower, Saint Louis University Hospital

I first spotted the beautiful copper roof of SLU Hospital’s Firmin Desloge Tower from the windows of the Gateway Arch in the first couple of days I lived in St. Louis, back in the Christmas of 1985/early January 1986. It had held up to the passage of time, and I hope that once the new…

Gallaudet School

I’m more familiar with the famous Gallaudet University in Washington, DC, but this school shares a name with that famous school for the deaf. It is a beautiful building.

Shingle Style Survivor

The date in city records of 1889 sounds right. This is such an amazing house, a relic of shingle style picturesque houses built in the city in the boom decades after the Civil War. It sits surrounded by parking lots, but I’m glad it’s still here.

Park Avenue, Tiffany, Part Two

Further east of Park Avenue in the Tiffany neighborhood, there are some missing houses, but for the most part, there are nice, stable and well-maintained houses that can be saved in future redevelopment plans.
