The Beauty of Dutchtown, Part 51: Meramec Street Between Minnesota and Pennsylvania Avenues, North Side

Facing the old Maryville College, which was demolished and replaced with apartments when it moved out to West County are two landmark houses in between Minnesota and Pennsylvania avenues.

This house had long been the Schumacher Funeral Home, but it was a private residence before that, including the home of the Frederick Meister, President of the German Savings Institute before possibly becoming a rooming house.

I suspect the house once sat on a parcel that took up the entire block south of the alley.

The next house on the corner is a beautiful Spanish Revival composition that is relatively simple in its details. Like so many houses in St. Louis, it addresses both exposures along Meramec and Pennsylvania.
