The “old estate” I was referring to back in September of 2018 was the Orthwein property in Huntleigh, and since then the property was sold off and subdivided. Large McMansions have gone up on the western end of the property. It was by far the largest tract of undeveloped land in St. Louis County outside of Wildwood or the river bottoms.

The farmhouse, which sat on the west end of the property near Geyer Road, has been demolished. On the east side of the property, near Lindbergh Boulevard, there are still some large tracts of land that are open pasture. The original Orthwein house, which I featured in a St. Louis Magazine article, had long been subdivided off and has a different owner.

The name of the new subdivision, “Old Polo Run,” is appropriate, as this is where the Busches and other families used to play that game, as well as this area also being the location of the Bridlespur Hunt Club. Such activities have moved further west into the country, as this was at one time. Below, as this aerial photograph shows in 1937, there was little development other than the Orthwein house and a few other buildings west of Lindbergh.
