Historic Photos of Immaculate Conception Church Under Construction, 1908

A reader sent me these wonderful photos of his grandfather, John J. Newport, working on the roof of Immaculate Conception Church on Lafayette Avenue.  In the background, you can see the neighborhood before it was decimated by the construction of I-44.

    Damn, that is some nice copper smithing right there. Now that is what I call a ridge cap! How opportune that the photographer caught them brazing the copper with molten lead.

    Man, no harnesses! I guess you become accustomed to it, but still, one stiff gust and…

    Dollars to doughnuts, those stonemasons were Italian.
