West Side of 12th Street, Soulard

Bellefontaine, Soulard and A-B Brewery 114

You can always tell where the wealthy people lived, besides the obvious size and ornateness of their houses. They lived on large lots, set back from the street, along major arteries (which were desirable before the roar of automobile traffic), and they were set back from street wall. 12th Street, wider than other Soulard streets, unfolds like a grand promenade of stately homes. When Gravois snatched onto 12th (now Tucker) up north of here, it relieved the street from heavy traffic.
