Arsenal Street and Compton Avenue

Arsenal Avenue through Tower Grove East is different than much of the rest of the neighborhood. While it feature many houses built in the early Twentieth Century, it was also long an artery from Gravois out to places such as the Insane Asylum or the Potters’ Field (though those places were also reachable by train) so there were houses and other businesses lining Arsenal. The bend in Arsenal is a relic of two old French fields that came up from the river that disrupted the checkerboard pattern of the St. Louis Common Fields.

Update: The building above was hit by an SUV in the middle of July of 2021.
