I really like the College Hill neighborhood; it’s hilly, sort of isolated, and seemingly forgotten by everyone except its residents. But there is still a lot left, and it’s not all in bad shape.
My elderly neighbor across the alley lived up there back up until the 1970’s when he moved to the Tower Grove East. Something about housing prices crashing or something like that.
The aspect of the neighborhood that strikes me the most is the variety of housing stock. While large portions are beautiful in their repetition of similar housing stock on the same street, creating a sense of rhythm as you go by, College Hill is just a fascinating mix of different styles and eras of houses. Mansions sit next to four family flats, and wood frame houses hold their own next to brick houses.
Update: The house on the left below has been demolished.
