Update: Identified by readers as the old St. Stephen’s United Church of Christ.
I do not know the story behind this church; some sources say this was Our Lady of Mount Carmel, but that does not seem to be right, as that church was on Annetta.
A Blog detailing the beauty of St. Louis architecture and the buildup of residue-or character-that accumulates over the course of time.
Chris, this was St. Stephens church. I can’t remember the exact denomination, it might have been United church of Christ. My. Carmel is just up the street on Halls Ferry and Annetta
Thank you, David!
This was St. Stephens United Church of Christ. My family attended from the early 1960’s thru the mid-1970’s.
Your site is such a great resource Chris! I was looking for the name of this church and finally found it here in your comments section.
This is definitely St Stephens United Church of Christ. My brother and I were christened here in the first half of the 1950s. The church was originally Evangelical and Reformed, but that denomination merged with others to form the United Church of Christ in 1957. Members of St Stephens voted to close their congregation when membership dwindled drastically. After that the building was sold to another denomination. It is a lovely building, and I am glad other worshipers use it now.
