Bethlehem Lutheran

Bethlehem Lutheran’s owners apparently want to tear the church down, but lack the money to do so. Thank God, as it is an incredibly beautiful church that should still be here when Hyde Park rebounds, of which it is already showing signs.

The church is in bad shape, but obviously not past the point of rehabilitation.

In a city dominated by beautiful Roman Catholic churches, it’s great to see the Lutherans representing as well.

Yes, this is the home of the infamous Jesus statue in the cellar. I love how this church dominates the view of northbound North Florissant Avenue.

Update: The church was demolished in the summer of 2014.

What is the story with the Jesus statue? I have not heard it.

  2. Ditto on the "Jesus statue." I Googled it and found nada.

There is apparently a large statue of Jesus in the basement that has startled many people when they came down the stairs.

Great photos , I’m i try and take photos while driving by these places , how do you manage to take good pictures and not be afraid?

I have rarely felt afraid in North St. Louis. I generally stay in my car not out of fear but out of time constraints. Hopping out for a few minutes is safe as well. Most people I’ve talked to on the North Side are curious, friendly or indifferent to my presence.
