Carrollton, Greene County, Illinois

South on U.S. Highway 67 from Jacksonville is the county seat of Greene County, Carrollton. It’s fascinating to see how quiet and rural the countryside of Illinois becomes when you get away from the major arteries, whether they’re the interstate or railroad, and quaint towns appear on the old highways. It is only sixty miles from St. Louis, which is the same distance to Warrenton, considered an exurb of the greater metropolitan area.

I couldn’t find out much about the courthouse or the town, but it was organized very early, in 1821, but it was designed by Henry Elliott of Chicago in 1891 in the Romanesque Revival style.

The square around the courthouse is lined with some nice Italianate storefronts, many with their original cast iron fronts, which were very likely made in St. Louis.
