Before we get up to Cates Avenue, we’ll look at a couple of buildings down on Clemens Avenue, such as this apartment building.

We’ve looked at Clemens Avenue east of Clara Avenue, back in April of 2019.

We looked at Cates Avenue west of Porter Mall back in late November.

To the east of the mall, there are a fair number of houses in good shape.

Of course, what is left makes us wonder what was demolished for the urban renewal plan that was implemented in the West End back in the 1960s and 70s.

One thing that strikes me in this neighborhood are the trees, which I didn’t crop out of my photos, as you can see below.

I love how you brought attention to the trees along Cates Avenue. It’s easy to focus on the buildings, but the natural elements like trees can add so much to the neighborhood’s charm. Do you think these trees are part of the area’s original design, or did they come about later?
Good question. In some neighborhoods, the original trees are still standing. I wonder sometimes if these are volunteer trees that have grown up later due to their lack of pruning.
