Chapel, Maryville University

When the old Maryville College and its chapel was left behind, the new Maryville University in West County soon built replacements for those accoutrements of the past.

Built in 1981, the Huttig Chapel reflect the architecture of the time. I like it.

The Crown of Thorns forms the handles for the front doors.

Inside, a soaring ceiling leads up to a clerestory partially screened by a grate.

The large cross hangs from the ceiling.

Mary as the Woman of the Apocalypse comes from the old chapel.

The Four Evangelists are also from the old building, and are from the Mayer Family of Munich, which are still in business.

If you look closely below, you can see all five windows in the apse behind the high altar.

What a contrast there is between the old & new chapels!

The shapes of the tops of the windows of the four evangelists do not appear rounded in the old photo as the current photo illustrates. Were the tops simplified to facilitate the new installation?

I’m beginning to think that the evangelists were at least not in their entirety behind the high altar. But if they were, their Gothic pointed arches were altered.
