Chapel of the Risen Christ, Resurrection Cemetery, Interior, Part One

We’ll head inside the Chapel of the Risen Christ at Resurrection Cemetery now, going through doors with Emil Frei & Associates stained glass. As mentioned yesterday, the chapel was designed by St. Louis Design Alliance and built by BSI.

And as I mentioned before, the huge sweeping roof, as well as other elements, are based off Le Corbusier’s groundbreaking design at The chapel Notre-Dame du Haut.

Particularly note the small square windows that punctuate the curtain walls on either side of the altar. If there is one major difference it is the abundance of artificial lights here in St. Louis as opposed to the much darker, Gothic architecture-influenced space at Ronchamp.

As noted by the reader who alerted me to this new chapel, there are already many Catholic churches in St. Louis with similar sweeping ceilings such as this and influenced by Ronchamp, among them St. Martin de Porres in Hazelwood, St. Clare of Assisi in Ellisville or the Immacolata in Richmond Heights.

The skylight over the altar is also an innovation at this chapel.

I particularly like the large Emil Frei windows of various sizes that provide counterpoints to each other on perpendicular walls.

Likewise, the rich reds and complementary yellows and oranges of the front doors mark the boundary between the sacred and the profane.
