Dr. Martin Luther King Drive From North Jefferson Avenue to Prairie Avenue

As I was heading towards Dr. Martin Luther King Dr., I glanced to my left while on North Jefferson Avenue and noticed the back portion of a building on Olive Street. No word on what happened.

I turned onto MLK Dr. and proceeded west. This first portion is the former Franklin Avenue, and only later does it turn by about 30 degrees and orient onto the former Easton Avenue. This was once a thriving commercial district that I’ve looked at before, first back in September of 2012, as far as I can tell. I returned in November of 2014 and in January of 2017.

The street developed early due to it being St. Charles Rock Road, and these two Second Empire rowhouses show that the buildings along it were quite nice.

This view looks toward Grand Center; I didn’t use a zoom lens or anything–it really is that close. There is so much vacant land that could be built on but sits empty, and has for decades.

I really like this fire station which I photographed before.

I photographed the Novelty Theater next to this warehouse that was being demolished earlier this year; the demolition is complete now.

I crossed over Grand Boulevard and then sat at this light for what seemed like ten minutes, while other drivers and I watched some crows rip this bag apart and eat the unknown contents. Why can’t St. Louis get its act together with traffic light timing?

Which Street becomes St Charles Rock Road?

St. Charles Rock Road was Easton in St. Louis, the current MLK Dr. For a while before being renamed Easton, it was known as St. Charles Rock Road inside the city limits. It changes to St. Charles Rock Road after Wellston.

Thank you for recording and witnessing all this. I wander up Jefferson from time to time and am overwhelmed by all of what was and what racism took from us. It was not, as you record, subtle.
Whatever comes back must do so organically. Just hopefully with some intelligent oversight.
