The former Federal Building, which is all that it was called when it first opened, relieved office space pressures from the Old Post Office, which actually again holds offices for the federal government.

It’s interesting reading old newspaper articles at the time, because it was at the height of the dislike for the Second Empire, and the Old Post Office was described in the most unflattering terms. Of course today, it is highly prized and considered a landmark.

I researched high and low for the architect of the building, but could never find the name. It’s the paragon of Modernism: emphasizing the strength of modern materials such as steel.

Sitting on a granite pedestal, it then has a first floor that is set back with three stories above.

The service areas are pushed to the back with entrances to the parking garage accessed from the rerar.

I have taken shelter there several times during rainy parades. It is actually a pretty nice building. Hope it is used for something these days.
