Lemp Avenue Between Arsenal and Pestalozzi Streets, West Side

I could have sworn I photographed this stretch of Lemp Avenue before, but apparently not. It’s a beautiful stretch of mostly Second Empire houses, with a few other styles thrown in.

Crittenden Street, which is much narrower and actually ceases to exist in Tower Grove East, passes through here. It was always practically an alley.

This stretch of Lemp Avenue was originally known as John Street, but when street names were consolidated, it’s pretty obvious that the more politically and economically Lemp Brewery’s namesake won out over the John name, thus the Lemp appellation then extended all the way north to Gravois.

It’s interesting that there’s a storefront in the middle of the block, which is rare. They are normally on the corner.

Then we reach Pestalozzi Street.

    Lemp is not limp.

Any idea who John Street was named after?

Good question—it’s a very popular given name, obviously.
